These 5 frame starter hives called a Nucleus or "Nuc" for short are a great way to boost your year in beekeeping. You're starting with a mini hive, one that has an established laying queen, brood and pollen supplies included. There are available here at our farm on May 16, 2020. There will be a free Basic Beekeeping class at 3 pm (subject to change as date gets closer) hosted by Stan Moulton from "The Honey Company", a 4th generation beekeeper and master of the feral bee project and supplier of these nucleus. After the class, each buyer will bring your own Nuc or deep box (that you will supply) and will get an individual hands on lesson and inspection of your hive as the bees are transferred into your box. You will spot and inspect the queen when doing so. After transferring, you can enjoy time n our farm with other classes and activities and then at dusk when all the bees come back, get help wrapping up your hive and taking it home.
Nuc: A 5-frame starter colony with a queen. Compatible with *deep* hives only.
Comes on wooden frames with new queens, split from an overwintered colony. Queens are from our feral bee project.
Nuc (pronounced “Nuke”) is short for hive nucleus. A nuc is a 5-frame starter colony of honeybees with a queen. The 5 deep frames contain worker bees, drawn comb, a laying queen, eggs, larvae, and sealed and emerging brood. Nucs do not include the beehive boxes.
Packages can be installed into any type of hive, while nucs are limited to deep Langstroth boxes only.
To produce these nucs, we divided overwintered colonies and grew them onto 5 deep frames.
Nucs come on 5 wooden frames built in Utah by Utah woodworkers using new, up-cycled wood.
These come with a health certificate, upon request. They are guaranteed to be disease-free for 30 days. Please report any queen issues within 10 days.
