*GOJI BERRIES

Goji berries are a favorite of mine. They are a great producing shrub with small thorns that aren't really a problem. They're upright, prolicif and beautiful. I love them for their high vitamin C. Here in the west, citrus isn't as readily available. I harvest my Goji berries when fully ripe and dry them. I've made into a powder to add to pancakes, muffins, smoothies, jams etc or snacked on them like dried fruit in my trail mix. They are also helpful to plant if you have other berries that you want the birds to stay away from. Plant a couple of these Goji berries and the birds will go for them and not your grapes and strawberries. They still produce enough that you'll get plenty enough gojis while still sharing with the birds.

PIXWELL GOOSEBERRIES

Deciduous shrub grown primarily for its berries. Spring brings inconspicuous green-red flowers followed by large green to pink berries. This gooseberry is thornless and berries are easy to pick, hence the name. Great for pies and cooking but may be too tart for eating fresh. Grow in fertile soils with moderate amounts of water for greatest berry yield. Prune out 1/3-1/5 of the oldest canes each year to induce greater yields.Pixwell Gooseberry will grow to be about 4 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 5 feet. It has a low canopy. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 15 years. This is a self-pollinating variety, so it doesn't require a second plant nearby to set fruit. This edible plant produces large, oval, green berries becoming blushing pink in mid-summer when ripe and ready for eating. This fruit is delicious in pies and jellies. Plant in full sun yo part shade. They will produce fruit the season after they are planted but these starts are usually so big and beautiful, I've gotten some fruit the first year. Picture from:myhomesteadiowalife
